Differences Between Online and Land-Based Craps

There are many differences between online Craps and land-based, continental-style casino Craps. The most obvious difference, of course, is the reduction of major distractions and the absence of people in the online setting. The main practical differences between them, however, have to do with buying chips, making a bet and cashing-in at the end of the game.

Buying Chips in an Online Casino

When playing online Craps, you cannot physically buy or play with chips. You will simply make a cash deposit using a valid credit card. After arranging a deposit balance online, you can wager using virtual chips by withdrawing money from it.

Buying Chips in a Land-Based Casino

When playing Craps in a land-based casino, you can buy chips from a cashier, or right at the Craps table. If you wish to purchase chips from the dealer in order to wager, you simply have to wait for a pause in the game, place your cash in front of you on the table felt, and loudly exclaim: "Change please". An appropriate buy-in amount in Craps is anywhere from 10 to 20 times your average bet. If you are a $5.00 bettor, this means your buy-in, typically, should be $50.00-$100.00.

The dealer will exchange the entire amount you have set on the table for house chips of equal value. He will push the chips across the table to your direction, and then drop your cash into a slot in the tabletop. You should then stack the chips you are not wagering at the moment in the rails, that is, the grooved area of the Craps table that is provided to keep chips that are not playing.

Keep in mind that the dealer will not give you any change. He will convert your total cash amount only into chips. It is your responsibility to verify the value of each of your chips, as well as checking that you have been given the correct amount for your cash.

Chip colors are fairly standardized in the casino industry. Red chips are $5.00, green chips $25.00, and black chips $100.00. Occasionally, you will also see $1.00 value chips (white) or $1.00 tokens (silver) on the table. Some casinos also use a $2.50 chip that is usually pink. Chip colors above the $100.00 denomination vary widely, with purple being a common choice for $500.00 chips.

Making a Bet in an Online Casino

There are minor variations within online casinos for making a bet. Generally, they are all well explained and easy to follow. On the online Craps table layout there will be a clearly marked section directly in front of the player. There, you will find different betting lines, boxes or circles where you may place your wager.

Once you decide how much you wish to wager, you must first click on the chip (the amount) you are wagering with, e.g. a $5.00 chip. Next, you must click on your betting line, box or circle where you wish to place your bet. For example, if you decide to make a $10.00 bet on the dice roll, you would first click on the $5.00 chip, then click twice on the betting area provided. If you change your mind, you can usually draw down or reverse your bet by right clicking on the chips you wagered with.

One of the distinct advantages of playing Craps online is that most online casinos will offer the player the option to either play for fun, where you risk only virtual (not real) money, or playing for real, where you will risk real money. When playing for fun, you will be given an imaginary cash balance, e.g. $5,000.00 with which you can play until you feel comfortable enough to play with real money or decide to leave. This enables you to get comfortable with the software and with the house rules applicable to that casino. Bear in mind that maximum and minimum bets vary from casino to casino.

Making a Bet in a Land-Based Casino

Once you have taken a place at the Craps table, you will notice that the felt layout has the bets clearly marked. Like the online version of the game, there will be several betting sections available in front of you, i.e. lines, boxes or circles. Most betting areas are located within comfortable arms? reach from where you are standing. Once you decide how much you wish to wager, you may take one or more chips from your stack on the rail, and place it / them inside the betting box or circle. Again, you must bear in mind that maximum and minimum bet limits vary from casino to casino.

Cashing In at an Online Casino

When you wish to cash in some or all your credit balance (virtual chips), you simply have to click the button that says either ?Cashier? or ?Banker.? Then, you click on withdrawal, and then enter the amount you want to withdraw. Your credit card will be charged the full amount of your deposit, yet your winnings will be paid out via wire transfer or bank draft.

Service charges may apply if you select wire transfer. Charges for bank drafts are uncommon. Some online casinos will forward your bank draft via overnight courier, charging you that service. Otherwise, they will be sent out by mail and it normally takes from two days to two weeks for delivery, depending on your location and mail service quality.

Cashing In at a Land-Based Casino

When you have finished playing, you may wish to have the dealer cash you out, or you may want to take your chips to the cashier to exchange them for cash.

If you have groups of smaller denomination chips in front of you, you may want to "color up" your chips. This simply means exchanging groups of smaller denomination chips for larger valued chips. Craps tables usually move very fast; therefore, it is better sometimes to take the smaller coins to the cashier for cash or to another table for more wagering.
